Scar revision is a surgical and non-surgical process aimed at improving the appearance and texture of undesirable scars. Whether scars are raised, depressed, wide, tight, or discolored, the goal is to make them blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin. Treatments are tailored based on scar type—be it raised (“hypertrophic” or keloid), indented, or broad.
Depending on the scar, revision techniques can include surgical excision with layered closure to minimize tension, dermabrasion to smooth surface irregularities, or targeted methods like subcision to break up tethered scar tissue. Non-surgical options may include laser resurfacing, chemical peels, microneedling, or pressure therapies to improve texture and color. In some hypertrophic or keloid scars, injections or silicone-based dressings help flatten and soften the area.
After revision, the treated area often appears pink and slightly swollen for several days as healing begins. Patients typically follow a tailored aftercare plan, which may include silicone sheets, massage, sun protection, and activity limitations to support optimal healing. Once fully healed, scars tend to be smoother, flatter, and less noticeable, boosting skin appearance and patient confidence.
