Liposuction is a body-sculpting procedure that removes stubborn fat deposits from specific areas. It is the second most requested cosmetic surgery today. While not a substitute for diet and exercise, it can effectively eliminate fat that remains resistant to lifestyle changes. The ideal candidates are individuals near their normal weight with firm, elastic skin. Although age isn’t a limiting factor, older patients with reduced skin elasticity may see less optimal results.
Traditional liposuction involves making a small incision, inserting a narrow tube (cannula), and vacuuming out fat from beneath the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up and remove fat.
Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is a newer method that uses a motorized cannula tip that moves 3,000 to 5,000 times per minute. This technique is especially effective for areas with firmer fat like the outer thighs, back, and breasts. PAL offers similar recovery times to traditional liposuction.
Anesthesia may vary depending on the amount of fat being removed. Smaller areas may be treated with local anesthesia and a sedative, while most procedures use twilight anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable and pain-free throughout.
Post-procedure effects include bruising, swelling, and soreness. Most patients take 3 to 7 days off work and wear a compression garment for several weeks to reduce swelling and support healing. Scars are minimal and typically very small. In rare cases, rippling of the skin may occur in the treated area.
