Gynecomastia surgery is designed to reduce enlarged male breast tissue caused by excess fat, glandular tissue, or both. The procedure is performed under twilight or general anesthesia and helps restore a flatter, firmer chest contour. In addition to fat removal, skin around the areola may also be tightened, especially in cases where there is significant volume reduction.
A small incision—less than half an inch—is made around the areola. Through this opening, a liposuction cannula is inserted to liquefy and suction out fat beneath the skin. If necessary, excess glandular tissue is also surgically removed. In more advanced cases, extra skin may be excised to ensure proper contour, and the areola may be resized for proportion.
Recovery typically takes about one week. Drain tubes may be placed temporarily to help prevent fluid buildup. A compression garment is worn for 6 weeks to support healing and minimize swelling. Most patients can return to full physical activity by the six-week mark.
