Tummy Tuck

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are men and women in good physical health who struggle with stubborn fat deposits or loose abdominal skin that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. It is especially beneficial for women who have had multiple pregnancies and experienced stretched abdominal muscles that cannot return to their original state.

How It Works

A full tummy tuck typically involves an incision along the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area, and a second incision around the belly button. The skin is separated from the abdominal wall, and loose muscle tissue is tightened and sutured together to reinforce the abdominal wall. Excess skin is removed, a new opening is created for the belly button, and all incisions are closed and dressed.

A pain pump is inserted to deliver continuous numbing medication to the area, and a support garment must be worn for 6 weeks. Patients often see immediate results in the form of a flatter, firmer stomach. While scars are permanent, they will fade significantly over time.

Mini Tummy Tuck, Liposuction & Recovery

For some, a mini tummy tuck is sufficient. This less invasive option focuses on the area between the incision and the navel. The skin is stretched, trimmed, and sutured, without affecting the belly button. Liposuction may also be used to remove fat from the hips for enhanced contouring.

Recovery varies by individual, but most patients need about two weeks of downtime. Normal activities can typically resume after six weeks.
